Growing cycle
Mid-to-late maturing · open-field cultivationSowing
Around 25 AugustKeep to the sowing date. Delayed sowing means poorer overwintering, more missing plants, smaller bulbs and lower yield.
Before winter
About 4 leavesPlants at this stage before winter sets in are the condition for a high yield.
Harvest
Around 15 JuneHarvest falls outside the peak supply of summer onion, which opens a selling window at a higher price.
Site and soil
Well-drained sandy loam, pH 6.2–7.2. In-row spacing of 12–14 cm — lower density gives better air circulation and more uniform bulbs.
Irrigation
Watering thoroughly right after sowing decides germination and uniformity. After overwintering, irrigate without delay. Water less often but generously — too frequent irrigation causes waterlogging and disease. In midsummer irrigate at dawn or dusk, not during the midday heat.
Fertilisation
Apply post-winter topdressing as early as possible, in the second half of March, and complete the final application by the end of April. Nitrogen and potassium at roughly a 2:1 ratio.
What to watch for
Excess nitrogen, or applying it too late, weakens standing ability, delays harvest and markedly reduces storage quality. On sites with heavy snowfall, dig deep furrows so that water does not stand in spring.
